Seagrass Mapping
Quantifying seagrass biomass accurately, a species-level seagrass database, the quantification of Blue Carbon.
Coastal communities boast extensive seagrass ecosystems that play a crucial role in carbon sequestration, known as Blue Carbon. Quantifying seagrass biomass accurately is essential for understanding its carbon storage potential. Traditional methods for biomass estimation often lack spatial resolution and may not capture fine-scale variability. In this proposal, we aim to leverage High-Frequency Echograms and Density measurements, complemented by ground-truthing by SCUBA Divers to build a species-level seagrass database, to enhance the quantification of Blue Carbon. Fishers and local community members will be trained and employed on this project to ensure equitable access and understanding of the value of the seagrass ecosystems that border their homes.
